Vaginal Microbiome Test
Who should use a Vaginal Microbiome Test?
Are you dealing with frequent episodes of thrush, vaginitis itching, discharge, discomfort?
Repeated thrush could be a sign that your vaginal microbiome is out of balance.
This at-home vaginal swab test helps identify underlying microbial imbalances that make you more prone to recurring yeast infections. Whether it’s an overgrowth of Candida albicans, low levels of protective Lactobacillus, or bacterial issues, this test may give you the insight that you need.

Why Choose the Vaginal Microbiome Test?
This test is ideal if you
- Experience recurrent thrush (2+ episodes in 6 months)
- Feel frustrated by short-term relief from antifungal treatment
- Think you may have BV
How much does test cost UK?
The cost of the test is £199 include shipping and is the most affordable on the market.
What the Test Measures
| Category | Microbes & Markers |
|---|---|
| Beneficial Bacteria | Lactobacillus crispatus, L. iners, L. jensenii, L. gasseri |
| Bacterial Dysbiosis | Gardnerella vaginalis, Atopobium vaginae, Prevotella bivia |
| Opportunistic Bacteria | E. coli, S. aureus, Enterococcus faecalis,Streptococcus agalactiae |
| Yeast Pathogens | Candida albicans, C. glabrata, C. parapsilosis, C. krusei |
| MYCOPLASMA Protozoa | Trichomonas vaginalis, Mycoplasma/Honophilus genitalium |
| Physiological Markers | Vaginal pH + IL‑1β inflammation indicator |
What Is the Vaginal Microbiome?
The vaginal microbiome is a natural mix of over 200 types of tiny organisms (mostly bacteria) that live in the vagina. This balance is very sensitive and can be affected by many things like:
- Your age
- Your background and genetics
- Your hormone levels (which change during periods, pregnancy, or menopause)
- Sexual activity
- Personal hygiene and infections
- Possibly your diet
- Antibiotic use
Even small changes in this balance can lead to problems. When the good and bad bacteria become unbalanced (called dysbiosis), it can cause:
- Bacterial infections like BV
- Repeated thrush or yeast infections
- Fertility problems, miscarriage, or early labour
- Pelvic pain or inflammation
- A higher risk of STIs
Testing your vaginal microbiome may give you an insight into imbalances that are causing your symptoms and help you find solutions such as targeted anti-fungals, probiotics and dietary changes.
How long do test results take?
The turnaround time for results is 2 weeks. The results will be e-mailed to you.

What methodology does the test use?
This test uses two advanced, laboratory-grade technologies to assess vaginal health:
Quantitative Real-Time PCR (qRT-PCR)
Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA)
These non-culture-based methods allow for precise measurement of both the vaginal microbiome and immune response markers, providing a highly accurate overview of microbial balance and inflammation.
qRT-PCR: Microbial DNA Quantification
The test uses quantitative real-time PCR to detect and measure the DNA of key microbial species found in the vaginal environment. This technique quantifies the number of gene copies present in the sample, allowing for detailed analysis of both beneficial bacteria and potential pathogens.
The qRT-PCR process is powered by TaqMan probe technology, ensuring high sensitivity and specificity in identifying microbial imbalances that may contribute to symptoms like thrush, BV, or vaginal irritation.
ELISA: Inflammation and Immune Markers
To complement the microbiota analysis, the test also uses ELISA technology to measure immune-related biomarkers in the vaginal environment—specifically interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), an important signal of inflammation and immune activation.
Sample Requirements for This Test
This test requires just one vaginal swab, which is quick and simple to collect at home—no clinic or GP visit needed.
The test is intended for individuals aged 16 and over
Please note: This test is not suitable for self-collection during pregnancy. If testing is necessary while pregnant, the sample must be taken by a qualified clinician and only if considered safe to do so.
What happens when my results are back?
We will email these to you with 17 days.
Why is Vaginal pH important?
A healthy vaginal pH is slightly acidic (3.8–4.5) and helps good bacteria like Lactobacillus thrive. This acidity protects against infections like bacterial vaginosis and STIs. A higher pH can signal an imbalance, allowing harmful bacteria to grow. This test measures your vaginal pH to help assess overall microbiome health.
Is this test safe during pregnancy?
You need to be over 16 years of age to do this test and you may not do the test if you are pregnant.
Can I take this test while using antifungals or antibiotics?
Wait at least 14 days after your last dose for accurate results.
What if I’m using vaginal probiotics?
Discontinue 7 days before testing to avoid skewed results.
How soon will I get my results?
Within 17 working days of the lab receiving your sample.
What happens when I get my results back?
Based on your results, your healthcare provider may recommend a personalized treatment plan. This could include dietary changes, supplements, or other interventions designed to restore balance to your gut microbiome. We offer candida consultations at our clinic and can help you with anti-fungals, dietary recommendations and stress management.
