 Why Patients use Tests

Many patients come to our  clinic after years of struggling with ongoing digestive symptoms that have not improved despite multiple GP appointments, restrictive diets, medications, or normal  nhs test results.

In clinic, we regularly see people experiencing symptoms such as bloating, trapped wind, constipation, diarrhoea, reflux, abdominal pain, excessive fullness after eating, food intolerances, and unpredictable bowel habits that are significantly affecting their quality of life.

Many patients tell us they feel frustrated, dismissed, or exhausted after being told that everything is “normal” despite continuing to feel unwell on a daily basis.

Others come to us after trying low-FODMAP diets, probiotics, supplements, elimination diets, or multiple treatments without fully understanding why their symptoms are happening in the first place.

Our approach is different.

Rather than simply focusing on symptom management alone, we aim to better understand the potential underlying drivers contributing to digestive symptoms.

This  may include factors such as Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), altered gut motility, food intolerances, post-infectious IBS, stress-related gut dysfunction, microbiome imbalances, constipation, or digestive dysfunction.

We also provide personalised IBS consultations from our sister linic in London and also work with patients virtually across the UK.

What symptoms can your tests help with?

Our IBS specialists support patients experiencing a wide range of digestive symptoms and gut health conditions.

Many patients decide to embark on private testing when they have  symptoms such as:

  • bloating and visible abdominal distension
  • trapped wind and excessive gas
  • abdominal pain or cramping
  • constipation or diarrhoea
  • alternating bowel habits
  • excessive fullness after eating
  • reflux and upper digestive discomfort
  • food intolerances and sensitivities
  • nausea or burping after meals
  • symptoms triggered by stress or anxiety
  • bloating after healthy foods, vegetables, or fibre

Gut Dysbiosis and Microbiome Imbalance, Candida, Parasites

The gut microbiome is a complex ecosystem of bacteria, yeast, fungi, and other microorganisms that play essential roles in digestion, immunity, and overall health. Disruptions to this balance, known as gut dysbiosis, can lead to the overgrowth of harmful bacteria or yeast, producing gases and other by-products that irritate the gut lining and contribute to symptoms like bloating, gas, and irregular bowel movements.

Our Approach: We focus on rebalancing the gut microbiome through individualized dietary adjustments and targeted antimicrobials and probiotics and prebiotics. When necessary, we use advanced microbiome testing such as GI-MAP Stool test to identify specific imbalances, such as Candida overgrowth or bacterial dysbiosis, allowing for a tailored plan that promotes a healthy microbial environment.

Post-Infectious IBS

For some individuals, IBS symptoms start after a significant gastrointestinal infection, such as food poisoning or gastroenteritis. This type of IBS, known as post-infectious IBS, may lead to persistent diarrhoea or loose stools that linger long after the infection has cleared. The resulting inflammation and bacterial imbalance in the small intestine can sometimes lead to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), causing bloating, gas, and discomfort.

Our Approach: We provide SIBO testing to determine if bacterial overgrowth is contributing to your symptoms. Based on the results, we create a targeted plan that may include dietary modifications, specific supplements, and natural antimicrobial protocols to address SIBO and reduce associated symptoms.

Food Intolerances

Certain foods can aggravate IBS symptoms, especially in individuals with sensitivities to specific carbohydrates, like those restricted on the Low FODMAP diet.

Identifying food intolerances can be challenging, as reactions vary widely from person to person and may depend on factors like quantity and preparation.
Our Approach: Through individualized dietary assessments, we help identify specific food intolerances. If appropriate, we guide you through the Low FODMAP diet or other elimination protocols, offering practical support to reduce symptoms while ensuring balanced nutrition. This approach provides a clearer understanding of your unique dietary needs and sensitivities, helping to improve digestive comfort and overall well-being.

Stress

Stress is a well-recognized factor that can worsen IBS symptoms. The gut and brain are closely connected through the gut-brain axis, meaning that stress can increase gut sensitivity, alter motility, and impact the balance of gut bacteria. Chronic stress can keep the digestive system in a state of inflammation, making symptoms like cramping, pain, and bowel irregularities more challenging to manage.

Our Approach: Our functional medicine approach includes supporting you in managing stress as part of your IBS care plan. We incorporate stress-reduction techniques, such as mindfulness practices, relaxation exercises, and lifestyle adjustments, to help you reduce stress’s impact on your digestive health. By addressing both gut health and stress, we support a holistic approach that can improve resilience to symptoms over time.

What if I am unsure what test to do?

If you are unsure about what test to do, you can book a consultation. This way we can review your symptoms in detail and make appropriate recommendations based on your medical history, symptoms and diet. We offer consultations at our sister clinic the IBS and Gut disorder clinic.

Gut Health Tests

We provide comprehensive gut testing, including microbiome analysis, SIBO, parasite, and Candida testing, and blood tests for food intolerances.  You can order these on-line.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)

Studies indicate that up to 30% of IBS cases may be linked to SIBO,  a condition where excessive bacteria in the small intestine can cause symptoms like bloating, gas, and discomfort. We provide hyrogen and methane breath testing.

Food Intolerances and Sensitivities

Research shows that certain foods can aggravate IBS symptoms, and personalized dietary changes can significantly improve quality of life. Our in-depth food intolerance testing helps identify specific foods that may be triggering your symptoms, empowering you to make targeted adjustments that can make a real difference.

Comprehensive Gut Health Testing- GI-MAP

Conditions like parasite infections, Candida overgrowth, and bacterial imbalances are often hidden contributors to IBS. Advanced gut testing such as a GI-MAP stool test can uncover these issues, allowing us to create a treatment plan that’s tailored to the precise needs of your gut health.

For almost eight years I had to watch helpless as my husband suffered severe and debilitating “IBS” symptoms. Despite seeing a number of NHS specialists no one seemed able to help him and his symptoms got worse and worse until he seemed to be sick almost every day. When we found Victoria we were at the end of our tether. She was quickly able to assess the cause of his symptoms and gave him a treatment plan. When we finally understood what the cause of my husband’s symptoms were I actually wept, not because I am an especially over emotional person, but because it was the first time in years that I had hope that he would be well again. My husband is now returning to full health and my children and I cannot thank Victoria enough.

Eva

After several years of health problems and the NHS being unable to find out what was wrong with me, I fortunately found Victoria whilst searching online. After changing my diet within just a few weeks I’m pleased to say that my health has improved dramatically since. I cannot recommend this service highly enough. Keep up the good work! Niki

Victoria has helped tremendously with my stomach issues. Her meal plan has greatly reduced my IBS symptoms and I’m very grateful!

Gareth J.

After years of weight gain, brain fog, headaches and fatigue I was completely fed up. Victoria helped me understand truly what was happening . I changed my diet and I now feel 10 years younger, have lost 5 pounds and am pleased to say will not return to bad habits!

Susie C.

When I went to see Victoria, I felt exhausted and unable to cope with my day to day activities. I had already been to my GP and done all the standard blood test but was told that everything was normal and that there was nothing they could do. I was depressed and unable to perform my job properly. When I saw Victoria she recommended an adrenal test that indicated that I had adrenal fatigue. She helped me devise a change in diet. Lifestyle and carefully explained exactly what to do to speed my recovery. I am pleased to say that I am now fully on my way to recovery and it has been such a help to have someone listen and understand.

FAQ

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is a personalized, systems-based approach to healthcare that focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of disease rather than just treating symptoms. It considers the whole person, including their genetics, environment, and lifestyle, to develop a deeper understanding of what’s driving their health issues.
For example, rather than viewing digestive issues, skin problems, or mental health symptoms as separate conditions, functional medicine looks for connections between them, often finding that imbalances in one system, like the gut, can affect other systems. This approach often uses advanced testing, individualized nutrition, lifestyle adjustments, and, when needed, supplements to help the body restore balance and function optimally.
