What is the difference between an allergy and food intolerance?

The key difference between a food allergy and a food intolerance lies in the body’s response.

A food allergy triggers an immediate and often severe immune reaction, with symptoms like difficulty breathing, rashes, swelling, a runny nose, and, in extreme cases, life-threatening anaphylaxis.

In contrast, a food intolerance usually leads to less severe, delayed symptoms such as digestive discomfort,  fatigue, rashes but does not involve the immune system in the same way. For some patients intolerances occur within 1-2 hours, however for others they can take 3 days or more.

How accurate are food intolerance tests and food intolerance testing?

The gold standard to assess food intolerances is to follow an elimination diet. However for many patients who are simply looking for ‘clues’ conducting a food intolerance test may be a faster route with the caveat that these tests are not conclusive.

Elimination Diets: While not a “test” in the traditional sense, elimination diets are often considered one of the most reliable methods. A person removes suspected trigger foods from their diet for a few weeks and then gradually reintroduces them while monitoring symptoms.

Some symptoms of a food intolerance may include the following:

  • Bloating
  • Inability to lose Weight
  • Skin Problems
  • Food Cravings
  • Stomach pain
  • Gas, cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Heartburn
  • Pain in your back side
  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema
  • Skin breakouts including acne
  • Hives
  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Gastritis
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Itchy skin

What is the difference between a Food Intolerance and Food Allergy?

Allergic reactions can  be immediate and life-threatening. Most patients know when they have an allergy as they may develop anaphylactic reactions or develop immediate reactions such as swelling or diffculty breathing.

Food intolerances and sensitivities are aften delayed reactions. You may eat a food today and develop bloating, discomfort tomorrow or even 5 days later. That is why it can be so hard to unmask the offending foods.

Some of our clients have found that identifying food sensitivities helped them with symptoms such as bloating, inability to lose weight, skin problems, food cravings, diarrhea, constipation, joint pain, asthma, IBS, insomnia and acne. Other clients have told us that the symptoms and conditons below have also improved after identifying a food intolerance.

What is a Food Intolerance?

A Food Intolerance is a reaction to foods that can cause a variety of symptoms.  Some of our clients have reported an improvement in symptoms ranging from bloating and fatigue to skin rashes and weight issues.   A Food Intolerance is not life-threatening. It can take up to 5 days for symptoms to develop making it hard to identify the culprit food.

Please note Food Allergies are not the same as Food Intolerances and can be life-threatening causing difficulty breathing, vomiting, and swelling of the lips. If you experience this kind of reaction you should seek medical advice.

What happens if I have a Food Intolerance?

If you do have a food intolerance, it is recommend that you cut out the offending foods.

It is important that you find suitable replacements and still eat in a balanced way. We will always find suitable alternatives so that you are eating a broad and varied diet. We have witnessed dramatic improvements in symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea and water retention once the offending foods have been eliminated. We work with clients who have IBS, bloating, diarrhea, eczema,  psoriasis, weight issues, candida and a variety of skin conditions.
